چکیده

We present V and I CCD photometry of suspected low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies detected in a survey covering ∼ 2.4 deg2 around the central region of the Dorado group of galaxies. The low-surface brightness galaxies were chosen based on their sizes and magnitudes at the limiting isophote of 26.0Vμ. The selected galaxies have magnitudes brighter than V ≈ 20 (MV ≈ −11 for an assumed distance to the group of 17.2 Mpc), with central surface brightnesses μ0 > 22.5 V mag/arcsec 2, scale lengths Based on the data collected at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory and Las Campanas Observatory, Chile Visiting astronomer, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO). Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The low surface brightness dwarf members of nearby groups of galaxies

The low surface brightness dwarf members of nearby groups of galaxies Abstract We present the photometric and spectroscopic results of a survey done in a wide-field area of nearby groups and poor clusters. The main goals are identifying and characterizing the properties of low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies and determining the galaxy luminosity function for M V > −13. We surveyed areas (typi...

Shell Structure in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present initial results from a wide field photometric survey of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. The focus here is on a small overdensity of stars located approximately 17 (670 pc in projection) from the centre of Fornax. Based on imaging data in both V and I bands down to V ≈ 21, the dimensions of the feature are ∼1.7×3.2 (68×128 pc) with an average surface brightness of 25.8 mag/...

Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distance for the Sculptor Group Dwarf ESO 540 - 032 ?

We present the first V I CCD photometry for the Sculptor group galaxy ESO 540-032 obtained at the Very Large Telescope UT1+FORS1. The (I, V − I) colour-magnitude diagram indicates that this intermediatetype dwarf galaxy is dominated by old, metal-poor ([Fe/H]≈ −1.7 dex) stars, with a small population of slightly more metal-rich ([Fe/H]≈ −1.3 dex), young (age 150 − 500 Myr) stars. A discontinuit...

The early - type dwarf galaxy population of the Fornax cluster

Aims. We analyse the photometric properties of the early-type Fornax cluster dwarf galaxy population (M V > −17 mag), based on a wide field imaging study of the central cluster area in V and I bandpasses. We used the instrument/telescope combination IMACS/Magellan at Las Campanas Observatory, providing much larger light collecting area and better image resolution than previous wide field imagin...
